BEGINNER’S GUIDE: HOW TO BET ON TEKKEN ONLINE

Tekken – Gameplay and Mechanics

Tekken 7 focuses on 1v1 combat. The central premise of the gameplay is relatively simple. Two players pick a fighter to face off against each other in an arena—the first one to deplete the other player’s life bar wins.

The game features a complete cast of iconic characters to choose from, each with a distinct moveset and abilities.

Tekken Combatants have a wide range of attacks that they can perform. High, low, mid etc. These attacks can be combined together to create combos. Combos can be further manipulated by incorporating movement and jumping. Chaining long combos where the opponent stays locked in your attack is key to victory.

The game has a ‘Rage’ mechanic. Introduced in Tekken 6, when a character’s health drops low enough, it starts glowing red, and their moves start doing more damage with their movements.

Tekken 7 introduced “Rage Arts” which are a character-specific cinematic move capable of taking a significant chunk of the enemy’s health when activated during Rage state. Rage could also be expended into “Rage Drives” which are powered up versions of regular attacks.

The “Power Crushes” mechanic was introduced in Tekken 7, which let fighters absorb damage from mid or high attacks while allowing their own attack to continue without interruption.

Most characters have a rage drive mechanic that enhances variations of existing moves.

How is Tekken different from other fighting games?

There are several noticeable differences between Tekken and its rival games.

Most fighting games have a meter system to pull off special moves. Tekken has it’s Rage system in place that aids in comebacks for the losing fighter.

While almost all fighting games play on a 2D plane, Tekken 7 introduced a sidestep mechanic that enabled 3D directional movement, which quite literally added a whole new dimension to the gameplay.

Tekken Betting Types

Although Tekken is a cult classic game, like Street Fighter, the fighting game community is pretty niche. Compared to the big boys like Dota 2, League, or CSGO, Tekken betting is not that big. There aren’t many sportsbooks that offer Tekken wagers, but you could indeed find a few. Most bets only come around during big tournaments.

Tekken Betting Options:

Sportsbooks can offer different types of betting types of wagers to bet on Tekken matches. Some of the common ones are:

  • Match Winner: Bet on the winner of a 1v1 match.
  • Round Winner: Bet on who wins a given round or duel.
  • Longest Combo: Bet on the player who will manage to achieve the highest combo in the match.
  • First Combo: Bet on which player will initiate the first combo of any kind on the opponent.
  • Tournament Winner: As evident, this is where you bet on the winner of the whole tournament.
  • Round Duration: Bet on the duration of the round, whether the round ends before or after a specific time on the countdown timer.

MONEYLINE
These bets are all about predicting the winner of a 1v1 match between 2 players. This is one of the most accessible types of bets to make in Tekken.

Moneyline bets are commonly expressed using American odds. Lower odds means the player is expected to win or is the favorite. Higher odds imply that the player is an underdog. For example:

King (1.77) vs Lucky Chloe (2.14)
Here, player King is the favorite, and Chloe is the underdog. The sportsbooks calculate payout based on the odds.

ROUND WINNER
Bet on which player wins a specific or first round of the series. Tekken matches play out in sets of multiple rounds. A round winner works based on American odds, just like match-winner.

HANDICAP
Handicap bets involve taking some points away from the favorite and giving them to the underdog when there is a skill disparity between the two opponents. For example,

In a best-of-3, the favorite might be given a handicap score of -1.5 rounds, and the underdog will be given a handicap score of +1.5 rounds. In such a case, the favorite must beat the underdog 2-0 without dropping a single round to win the bet. In contrast, the underdog would need to beat the opponent once and not drop more than 1 round to win the bet.

SPECIAL BETS
These are specialized bets used to wager on certain events occurring in the game, usually about a specific game area. For example, First Attack, Blocks, and more.

FUTURES/OUTRIGHTS
These bets are about predicting long-term events like predicting the tournament’s overall winner. This betting option requires tremendous insight into the player skills and performances. You can only bet on the tournament winner before the tournament has begun.

ROUND DURATION
Bet on the duration of the round. Whether the round ends before or after a certain time on the countdown timer. You can bet on an Over/Under spread and wager if you think the match will end before or after a specific timer count.
For example:

Duration 1 Round: over 15.5 seconds: (1.37) vs
Duration 1 Round: under 15.5 seconds: (3.208)

OR

Duration 1 Round over 20.5: 2.83 vs Duration 1 Round over 20.5: 1.45

Tekken Odds Types

The “Odds” refers to the likelihood or chance of a specific event occurring, e.g. Team X winning over Team B. Bets placed on the basis of these odds offered by bookmakers. The odds are calculated by different sportsbooks differently. So make sure to pick a decent and reputable sportsbook with fair odds.

Odds are of various distinct types: Decimal, Fractional, American, or Implied Probability. You’ll most often come across Decimal Odds, however.

DECIMALS ODDS

Decimal odds give you the easiest conversion from stake to return.

The Bets Tekken Player X (3.44)
The Outcome

Bet $10 with odds at 3.44
RESULT: $10 x 3.44 = $34.4 (Your $10 stake included)

The Bets Tekken Player X (3.2) vs Tekken Player Y (1.5)
The Outcome

From these odds, we can tell that the sentiment is that Player Y is expected to win(favorites) over Player X(underdog).
If Player Y wins, the return on your investment will be 1.5x times the amount invested.
Whereas, if Player X pulls an upset and wins, the reward payout will be 3.2x times the invested amount.

AMERICAN ODDS

These odds are represented by numbers with a prefix (+) and minus(-) sign. The positive(+) sign is assigned to underdogs’ odds and indicates the amount won for every $100 staked on the bet. Whereas, the negative(-) odds indicate the amount you need to stake to win $100 from the bet.

The Bets Tekken Player X (-140)
The Outcome

For example, Team X having -140 favorite odds would mean you need to bet at least $140 on them to win $100.
If you win, you get $100 and keep the invested $140.

FRACTIONAL ODDS

These odds are marked with a fractional number, with the top number dictating how much when you invest the bottom fractional number.
Favorable odds: Odds of 8/1 – Every $1 you bet will give you a payout of $8.
Unfavorable odds: Similarly, Odds of 1/3 – For every $3 you bet, you will receive a payout of $1.

IMPLIED PROBABILITY

This is a more readable way to denote odds, however, this can be highly inaccurate and is mostly just used as a reference to calculate risk.

The Bets Tekken Player X (40%)
The Outcome

Decimal odds = 100 / Probability odds
In this case: 100/40 = 2.5
RESULT: A $10 stake would return $25 ($15 profit)

TEKKEN BETTING FAQs

To start betting on Tekken, you need to find yourself a sportsbook that offers betting options or wagers on Tekken. We would suggest starting with the sportsbooks we’ve used and reviewed ourselves.

After you’ve found a reliable and trusted sportsbook to your liking, you will need to sign up to their website by providing your ID proof and proof of source of income. This is just to determine that you’re not underage and are betting with your own money. You will need to add some funds to your account before you can place bets.

The annual EVO Championship Series and Tekken World Tour are times when you can find plenty of betting options for the game on various sportsbooks. These are good times to bet on Tekken as all the top legendary players around the world meet and face off each other.

Tekken as an Esport is not popular for betting all around the year. At Least not outside of Asian regions. You can still bet but you wouldn’t know whom to bet on as you wouldn’t know the players.

It is slightly better to wait for major tournaments where world-renowned players face off each other like at the EVO Championship Series. These players play all around the year and you can track how they play, what’s their skill level, strengths, weaknesses, and form, as they usually stream their gameplay or fight in smaller tournaments all year round. Knowing the players will help you make better decisions.

Tekken itself is not an Esport with a lot of money behind it. It is more of a close-knit community of fans that make it one of the most exciting and popular Esports. But it is not picked up by most sportsbooks to make it a very lucrative option. Finding matches to bet on would be difficult and most sportsbooks only offer the most basic wagers.

The game sees a higher interest in betting during tournament seasons, but the rest of the year, there is not that much. If you’re looking to bet around the year, it’d be better to diversify rather than just focussing on Tekken.

Yes it is possible to make money on Tekken. You can find some sportsbooks offering wagers on Tekken but there aren’t many options.

But first, you need to pick a sportsbook website that is legal in your country/state or seek an offshore one. You need to provide your identification and proof of income to register on most reputed sportsbooks websites to register an account.

The legal age for gambling can vary depending on the laws of where you live. Pretty much every sportsbook website will have a minimum age limit requirement of 18 years, if not 21.
